About Nakilesh (10/30/19)

Nakilesh (DOB: 10/30/19) is an obedient child with bright eyes and a sweet smile. His small mud-walled hut built on government wasteland has a thatched roof and lacks even the most basic of conveniences. Nakilesh’s family does not have electricity to light their hut; instead, they rely on candles and kerosene lamps. Nakilesh, who enjoys attending school, often goes to his neighbor's house to do his homework, where he can sit comfortably under a light bulb. His father works as a day laborer on a farm. This farming job is only available for six months out of the year. During the off-season, in order to provide for his family, he works as a laborer at construction sites, which is not assured. Nakilesh's mother works for the government provided program, 100 days of labor, which is a promised 100 days of work a year for unskilled women at minimum wage. The supervisor might assign her any task, such as weeding fields or cleaning community ponds. The family lives on the banks of a river tributary and their house floods every year during the rainy season, forcing them to seek refuge in a neighboring government school until the water recedes. His parents' wages barely fulfill the family needs and they are concerned about Nakilesh and his infant sister's future. His parents see the daycare facility as a ray of hope for their son's education and they understand only education can break the cycle of poverty.
